The Challenge:
The aim of this children's book project was to educate elementary readers about basic anatomy and physiology at an early age, enabling them to understand common symptoms. My task was to create character designs for the main two characters, Karen and Kevin. The client provided brief descriptions of some individual scenes from the story, which he needed as illustrations to discuss his proposal with publishers.
My Approach:
To explore different style possibilities, I designed the main two characters in two different styles. The client ultimately chose less stylized characters with more realistic proportions.
The description the client provided:
"Children’s birthday party. Hats, balloons, and b’day cake on the table with one slice missing. A chunky friend in the background with cheeks full of cake"

"Playground at school. Kevin racing, sweating to push merry-go-round as Karen rides excitedly"
The description the client provided:
"Kevin and Karen in the elevator, crowd ‘ghosted’ in the background of the elevator car. Karen sneezing. Kevin holding up Kleenex"
